| Unit leaders (Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Assistants, and
Committee Members) are the ones our Scouts look to for a good program,
and for information about upcoming events. Basic Training is the
core of all good leadership, but it's only the beginning.
Once trained, Scout leaders need to stay informed about upcoming events,
campouts, changes to the program, and anything else that effects the
Scouts in their units. You might say Scout leaders need a regular
"continuing education course" in order to stay on top of
things.
Our council offers that regular course, every month,
August through May. It's called "Roundtable".
Roundtable begins at 7:00 PM, on the first Thursday of
the month, in the Dining Hall at Camp Seminole. Adult leaders from
all over the council meet to learn and improve the programs they give
their units. The typical Roundtable begins with a joint session
all all unit leaders, where we may hear topics ranging from National
Jamboree opportunities, Philmont Expeditions, Cub Family Campout plans,
and so on. After about 30 minutes, the Cub leaders and the Boy
Scout leaders split into two different groups to talk about aspects of
their specific programs.
Roundtable is also when unit leaders have the chance to be in on the
planning stages of council events. Council level planners use Roundtable
as a forum for seeking input from units on the next Camporee, the next
Council Pinewood Derby, etc.
Committed Scouters attend Roundtable. They know its value to
their local programs, and they value the encouragement and camaraderie
they experience during these sessions.
Most leader recognitions (those little square knots above the
uniform's left pocket) require a leader to attend at least four
Roundtables each year. Regular attendance at Roundtable helps make
sure you have the best and most current information you need to do your
job for our boys.
No registration is required.
Roundtable is free. Just show up. Bring your
Assistant Leaders. Bring your Committee Members. Bring your
parents. Just come on, bring a Scouting friend, and continue giving your
Scouts what they really deserve.... a trained leader. |
